Ferries to and from Italy

The main volume of European tourists travelling to Greece by car, uses the modern ferries, recently built, doing routes between Greek ports and those of neighbouring Italy.

The established Patras - Igoumenitsa - Corfu - Brindisi or Bari or Ancona line, has already been operating for almost thirty years, uniting Greece to Central Europe and the Scandinavian countries. It acts as a "bridge" from which every year several millions people pass, while in the last years the line has been enriched with departures for Venice and Trieste. At the same time, new ships possessing all modern facilities, attaining higher speeds and with convenient arrival and departure times.

In order to best serve the growing demand for mobile home transport, shipping companies have put to sea vessels with specially formulated areas for campers and caravans.

Travelling by these ships, experiencing their all-rounded hospitality and the up-to-date services, is a delight, combining a wide range of services with very reasonable prices. The ships have cabins of different classes, from outside cabins with shower and W.C. to internal economy cabins, offering every opportunity for comfortable accommodations. The services usually provided on board are air conditioning, bar, restaurants, wear shops, satellite communications (telex, tele-fax), video games and gambling (slot machines, casino, card rooms), pools, self-service, disco, movie theatre, baby-land, escalators, camping on board etc.

Besides, the daily departures from port, in late evening hours for the most part, and the option to be issued return tickets, ensure the passenger's timely arrival at his destination, and offer him the opportunity to enjoy an extra vacation day.

Ships doing the Greece - Italy routes belong to members of either the Union of Passenger Ships Owners, or the Union of Coastal Passenger Ships Owners.

You can get to and from Patras by train, bus or taxi and to and from Igoumenetsa by bus or taxi. Ferries can be booked by the the shipping companies, through travel agencies when you book hotels or through local ticket agencies in Athens, the islands and the mainland. If you are traveling with a car or require a cabin it is a good idea to book in advance. Backpackers and people traveling on the deck can usually get tickets the day of departure without a problem though of course it is better to be safe than sorry and not book last minute if you can.
