We are now going to take a little trip down Patission Street which is another main shopping street in Athens. Our first stop is the Athens Polytechnic University.
This is where the student rebellions of Nov 1973 against the military dictatorship began and ended when a tank crashed through the gates of the school. The gate is now a shrine.
The sculpture of the student's head is by Memos Makris and also commemorates the event. Some of his other works include a sculpture dedicated to the victims of the Mauthausen concentration camp in Austria, the monument to the Hungarian volunteers of the Spanish Civil War in Budapest, the monument of Liberation in Pécs and many other pieces that adorn squares and buildings all over Hungary where he lived in exile from 1950 to 1975 after being deprived of his Greek citizenship for being a leftist.
Many demonstrations and marches begin here.
When the students or the professor are not on strike they have some classes here but most are held in the part of Athens known as Panepistimiopolis near Ambelokipi
